Thanks Flay! I think my memory of the remark had undergone some Chinese whispers.

pps I think your third sentence might contain a non-sequitur. Love of one does not preclude caring about what Dvorak said, with or without airborne fruit.
Thanks, A M, for your eloquent response. And I'm glad to see that a delightful digression (as ardcarp beautifully put it) has ensued.
Obviously we will be able to turn our attention back to CE on Wednesday. But in the meantime, viva Dvorak!

Oh, and the Poulenc quotation is adorable!

Poulenc had a dry wit. He attended all the early productions of Dialogues des Carmelites and mused on the difficulties of achieving the effect of the guillotine, even though he had scored it carefully for the percussionists. In London it was too feeble, in New York too loud, in Hamburg too wooden. They always got it right in Paris! (My paraphrase - my google skills have not yet discovered the original).

Pretty well-prepared and disciplined all round. Big voices, but balanced.
Ps78 is a behemoth but was sure-footedly negotiated without fuss or much falter.
Liked the Scott, and the vol.
Like my Bruckner with a bit more 'halo', but, hey, you can't have everything.

Only real gripe was that the Precentor sounded like a mouse on short commons, either that or on the other side of the High...... .

...now there's a contentious comment... who will be first to wield the cudgel?

I was commenting on the distance away he seemed to have been placed by the balance, not on his character, devotion, pitch, attention to detail etc etc.

It's not often that any inadequacies at all are noted in respect of a precentor (as opposed to a precentrix!)

                              Predictable.
