Added resonance to the choice of archive voluntary, given this week's news of considerable damage to the rose window and organ of Soissons Cathedral in a winter storm. The photos that I have seen on Facebook show quite a mess.

The BBC has been plugging this archive CE as being in tribute to Peter King, who retired last summer after 30 years’ service. The Beeb did try to arrange a live CE broadcast from Bath Abbey last summer term, but this proved impossible to arrange, partly for some of the reasons alluded to in the So few Cathedral broadcasts this winter...... post.

But the broadcast will also anticipate the 90th birthday of John Joubert, which falls in March, as well as the impending retirement at Easter of Marcus Sealy, sub-Organist, after forty-two and a half years’ service.

A source close to Bath Abbey choir told me that there was intense discussion about what sort of post should replace Peter King's. Bath Abbey is more evangelical than most choral foundations, and some felt that the role of choral music in the Abbey's worship should be reduced. However, it seems that this view did not prevail.

Correct - his first Sunday in office was last weekend, and coincidentally Lux aurumque was one of the anthems sung.

Hopefully, in the future, we will hear the boys and men sing CE from Bath and not just the girls and men as has been the case in recent years.

Boys, girls, men, women; all should sing in such places, otherwise limitations are placed and unwelcome and antediluvian discrimination displayed.
