    Gem from Clare College Choir

Happened upon this unknown gem yesterday, tuning into The Choir half-way in to hear Harry Christophers pick a favourite recent choral track.

It was Ramsey's How Are The Mighty Fallen from the new recording from Clare College, conducted by Graham Ross

    Wonderful singing, great piece
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

    Good to hear of this.

This summer I sang the wonderful Sleep, fleshly Birth - another wonderful piece by Ramsey, a composer I knew nothing of. Here it is (without me, unfortunately):

Thanks for posting that, jean. A contemporary of Tallis, I presume? - he's not in my Concise Oxford Dictionary. It has quite a strong Italian feel in one or two places, too.

A bit later. Died 1644, so a contemporary of Thomas Tomkins.

Here is a link - it's about 18 mins. in. A very distinctive voice:
