One of my favourite services of the year and a must listen in Petrushka Towers. Interesting to see the final organ voluntary following the discussion we had on here one year concerning the anti-climactic feeling produced by Bach's Wachet Auf to conclude the service.

Must confess I like Wachet Auf at the end. It catches the mood of Advent only just beginning - and we have a very long one this year!

On the subject of content, would I be right in saying that all the choir items (apart from the plainsong, the Gibbons and possibly The Angel Gabriel)) are from the 20th and 21st centuries?

I am pleased to see the Christopher Robinson descants. Stephen Cleobury could learn a thing or two!!

Looks like it. Must be some kind of first, I'd say - well, for THIS seasonal regular service.

PS: remember that the service starts at 3 p.m.

GREATLY looking forward to a no-doubt fruity and full alto solo in the Gibbons! I have always been particularly impressed by the consistently stella alto section that Nethsingha manages to assemble!

Is this the first service Joseph Wicks is playing? Hopefully this voluntary can't be as bad as the exceptionally plodding rendition we had of the beautiful Wachet auf last year.

...or it could be sung by a tenor.

Bit of a struggle to find the order of service, as usual, but here it is:

Thanks. All I could find yesterday was last year's. Just one thought: wouldn't it be nice one year to hear the second closing voluntary? Is the start time of the programme scheduled for 4.30 so vital? (The old argument heard so many times at 4.30 on Christmas Eve. Hearing it on Christmas Day never really seems the same.)

                            Completely bowled over here.
Sadly, a short telephone call interruption meant that I missed the Britten and Shaw (must listen again), but it resulted in an extra listener, as the caller then said she would turn R3 on.

                            Congratulations to all concerned.

And here. Particularly enjoyed the David Bednall carol. Once again, I have to say that Helmsley is one of the truly great hymn tunes and it's such a pity it gets an airing only on this day! Anyway, as usual I turned the volume up high and joined in with gusto.
