Re message 11, yes Gabriel, Cantamus probably are consistently the most successful British choir in international competitions (but I don't know that for certain). They also tour abroad when no competition is involved - for example in Australia this summer.
As for "luxury", well, the choir began in Mansfield at the very heart of the Nottinghamshire coalfield and developed at the time of the bitter mining disputes of the 70s & 80s. The coal industry was devastated, the area depressed and the success of the choir in those decades was a shining light and source of pride for Mansfield. Pamela Cook, who founded the choir in 1968 and who directed the choir until her death three years ago, believed fervently that with training, encouragement, opportunity and family support, young singers could achieve great things, whatever their social background. She was truly inspirational.
The choir will celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2018. I first saw the choir, then consisting of around sixteen girls, performing an after-school concert in a room in Mansfield library. Around 500 girls have been members over the years and it is hoped to have a choir of 500 to celebrate the 50th anniversary.
