There's a bewildering variety of music-making that takes place under the 'amateur' umbrella from joyous non-auditioned community choirs to top notch chamber choirs.

I have the impression that the BBC is much more interested in subjecting its audiences to the former, rather than the latter.

If that's not disparaging of a certain sort of amateur choir, I don't know what would be!

That "certain sort of amateur choir" deserves to be encouraged, but as their quality is likely to be variable, perhaps BBC national radio listeners might expect a higher standard - which is where I came in, with the example of a non-professional choir that is the equal of (and maybe in some instances better than) singing groups who do get paid.
