    Voces 8 Live in Concert

    ...on Friday night.

Live from Trinity College Chapel, Cambridge, Voces8 performs motets by Bach.

I love the sound of this ensemble. The tuning of their final chords is a joy...and of course all the stuff before is pretty good too. For me the Praetorius and Mendelssohn in the first half stole the show. Singret dem Herrn is hard for any choir to bring off to perfection, and OVPP is especially taxing. Maybe a little fatigue did show from time to time. Jesu meine Freude had great agility, though maybe it was a bit muscular. A touch more tenderness needed, perhaps? I quite liked the short organ incipits before the Bach motets. Is this their own idea?

What a great ensemble they are; and judging by their international commitments, a very busy one too.

I enjoyed this as well - I found that much of the time it didn't sound like OVPP, possibly because the voices were so well matched. At times in the Jesu meine Freude I found myself thinking 'is that right?', because some of the harmonies/vocal lines sounded rather odd, but that may have been because I had the radio turned down and perhaps was missing some of it as a result.A case for listening again methinks. I've sung Singet dem Herren with large choirs so it was interesting to hear the 'small' approach.
