German Baroque Epiphany: BBC Singers 12 January

Performed with period instruments from leading ensemble St James’s Baroque, the BBC Singers and James O’Donnell combine Schütz’s masterpiece with other choral works from 17th century Germany for the Feast of the Epiphany (which falls two days before the concert) by Johann Schein, Samuel Scheidt and Michael Praetorius. Stephen Farr plays organ solo music by Dietrich Buxtehude.

This concert is now fully booked. Catch a broadcast of the performance on 12 January, on BBC Radio 3.

Perennial dilemma - want to listen to the music, don't want to listen to the BBCS, especially after the way they murdered JSB a couple of weeks ago.

Oh dear, yes. As I listened to Vox Luminis doing the same rep, I couldn't suppress the wicked thought.

I heard the Chœur de Radio France on the France Classique station recently and their tone was very similar to that of the BBC Singers!

In that case, I hope your heart will bleed for me too.

... and me too. Seems there are quite a lot of us who share oddoneout's unhappy dilemma.

One of my favourite choir conductors, James O'Donnell. Thanks for the thumbs up, DS! :)

For those of you who are so deeply traumatised at the thought of hearing a single chord sung by the BBCS, suggest you look at the dates of events in Jan., Feb., & April 2016 when they are performing, enter them with suitable symbols in your diaries and remember to unplug every device that may, even accidentally - or malevolently - allow them to be within your hearing range.

You will, I trust, be overwhelmingly relieved to know the no events are listed for March !

Based at the BBC's Maida Vale Studios, the BBC Singers perform all over the UK and abroad.

But seriously, I wish no-one had mentioned the BBCS. I would be really interested in this programme if it were with the Sixteen, the Monteverdi Choir or the Tallis Singers.

Thanks, but switching off, or on to radio 4 will suffice, should I come upon them......

This 'let's bash the BBC Singers' is ridiculous. If you don't think they'll sing your favourite piece of Scheidt well, then don't listen to it... Go to Spotify and find another group singing it.

No,it really isn't ridiculous, as long as it is specific to performances.

On occasions on this board people praise the BBCS for particular performances.Sadly, this is not as often as one might hope.

A fair point. For me, the issue is that Radio 3 plugs the BBC Singers more than they do any other ensemble, and I do not think they merit such worship. . .
