Bath Abbey is more evangelical by tradition than most choral foundations, like most of the C of E churches in Bath, for historical reasons connected to the Simeon Trust.

    Enjoyed the service though.
I can understand that but King's acknowledge in the introduction to the Order of Service that the Christmas Eve service is now public property and it is on these grounds that I advocate ticket sales/ballot. Demand for seats must greatly outstrip supply and, in any event, it must be something of an ordeal for those queuing in really foul weather which we are more likely to see in December.

I live in Bath and it's a bit better now. The Council (who are generally indifferent to noise pollution) realised this was bad publicity and met the buskers. They are still over-amplified (a rule that they should be audible no more than 50m away is unenforced) but there is a code of conduct that they don't perform at full volume next to the Abbey and it seems to be holding.

As for King's, there are elements in the College that have very mixed feelings about the choir and the attention it attracts. In recent years it has had to pay its way by undertaking foreign tours in December.

It's utterly hideous outside York Minster.

Endorse that. Some years ago, IIRC, the famous choir came under some pretty scary scrutiny by College authorities, and the level of revealed antipathy to what the choir represented surprised many in and out of College.

I wonder if that makes choice of repertoire for 'big' services and CDs more or less difficult?

Kings, I have been informed, is a surprisingly lefty College, having done away with most 'formal hall' meals. Exactly why I should have connected that with antipathy to trad chapel music I am not quite sure. Hic.

Thank you Mospsus for that update. Sounds like common sense has sort of prevailed.

Sorry if copycat tactics have found their way to York.

Judging by the plants and shrubs in flower in my garden at the moment the line about turning December into May was particularly appropriate this year!!

I couldn't decide whether to laugh or cry about this, so I just rolled my eyes.

                              I decided to and

Mind, he does have a point about the queuing system which, given December weather, is a major deterrent for me to attend but transport problems after the service rule it out anyway. While ticketing may cause extra administration, King's make a lot out of this service and its reputation and need to come into the 21st century in offering both comfort as well as joy.

I think several and then a call to Social Services to try and save the 8 year old from the clutches of that halfwit...

Thanks for posting it, anyway! Mind-boggling!

Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
