As for King's, there are elements in the College that have very mixed feelings about the choir and the attention it attracts. In recent years it has had to pay its way by undertaking foreign tours in December.

Endorse that. Some years ago, IIRC, the famous choir came under some pretty scary scrutiny by College authorities, and the level of revealed antipathy to what the choir represented surprised many in and out of College.
I wonder if that makes choice of repertoire for 'big' services and CDs more or less difficult?

Judging by the plants and shrubs in flower in my garden at the moment the line about turning December into May was particularly appropriate this year!!

Mind, he does have a point about the queuing system which, given December weather, is a major deterrent for me to attend but transport problems after the service rule it out anyway. While ticketing may cause extra administration, King's make a lot out of this service and its reputation and need to come into the 21st century in offering both comfort as well as joy."The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink

Thanks for posting it, anyway! Mind-boggling!

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
