Advent Carol Service

The Advent Carol Services will be held on Saturday 30 November 2024 at 6.00pm and Sunday 1 December 2024 at 3.00pm. The Sunday service will be broadcast live by BBC Radio 3.

PS: Just remembered that I'm hoping to go to a service elsewhere at 18:30 which includes a performance of the winning Charles Wood competition anthem (which I've mentioned elsewhere). That's perhaps too much God for one afternoon/evening!

PS: Just remembered that I'm hoping to go to a service elsewhere at 18:30 which includes a performance of the winning Charles Wood competition anthem (which I've mentioned elsewhere). That's perhaps too much God for one afternoon/evening!

We brought our own organist, in this case the head of Music at a Cathedral school. We usually do this, except when we went to Liverpool Cathedral when I think we had Dr Tracey himself.

The choir originates in Reading, and one of our members sang in the premiere of a choral song-cycle by Bryan Kelly, written I think for the opening of the Hexagon there and set locally. It concerned the relationship of Paul and Linda, a 'biscuit girl'. I've done Kelly in C a few times and, less frequently, his 'Jamaican' setting in E flat, which is enjoyable but rather betrays its origins as a piece for upper voices only.

Our Sunday evensong also included Bairstow's Lord, Thou hast been our refuge, which we were told is not currently in the repertoire of the Minster choir.
