As was Parry's 'Crossing the Bar' included by PT on Breakfast this morning as a tribute (together with JS playing Durufle's Prelude sur l'Introit d'Epiphanie). PT said that there would be further tributes on In Tune this afternoon.

I am equally stunned - what a loss to the world of church music: none better. I was privileged enough to be at his ?last? recital, in Hereford at the 3 choirs less than a fortnight ago, where his playing was quite magnificent.

It was certainly his last recital in this country. I gather from friends in Hereford that he couldn't even stop for lunch afterwards, as he had to rush to the airport to get a flight to Finland. Very sad news.

Yes, terrible news indeed. Kevin Bowyer once told me that he thought that Scott was one of the very few organists who could master Sorabji's First Organ Symphony (which sadly he never did).

I posted this earlier but it seems to have disappeared subsequently so I'm posting it again now.

              RIP...

Indeed, his recital at Hereford (his last in the UK, as it turned out), less than 2 weeks ago, was absolutely brilliant, technically and musically. There are few enough musicians of his calibre in the church music business, which makes his so sad and premature death even harder to bear. The community of St Thomas must be feeling totally bereft, and as for his wife, Lily, one cannot imagine ...

When John was a teenager he came with Wakefield Cathedral Choir and played our village organ which I had told the PCC was absolute rubbish and needed replacing. He made it sound heavenly and put my campaign back several years!! What a great organist and choir trainer. His Hyperion recordings I shall treasure as the best of their kind. RIP.

Here's an excellent recording of Psalm 121 to that beautiful Walford Davies chant under John Scott's direction.

His Mendelssohn organ music double cd is wonderful.

                      RIP.

Thanks for that MC. Deepest condolences to all his family and friends. What a great loss to mankind. Such a talent.

                                And mine

I was lucky enough to be present at the St Paul's 9/11 service on September 14 2001 when John Scott directed the choir in the most moving service I've ever attended.

(Incidentally, does anyone have a recording of this as I've never seen it apart from being there?)
