A second listening on a walk to hear it again; especially the anthem. I recall Matthew writing it while he was at the Brompton Oratory - an arresting and brilliant mosaic - like a potted cantata. Solid composition. This service was a very moving act of worship with a choir and organist in fine fettle.

What made it feel more concert-like for me was the stingy amount of psalmody. Ps 136 isn't all that long, and we got less than half of it. Maybe they don't do much because a large proportion of their congregation are tourists and it's thought they might get bored with more than a few verses?Last edited by mopsus; 02-06-24, 19:40.
