Is there still nothing from the Bishop about his Report? Looking more and more like a cover-up......

It's generated quite a game of musical chairs, with St Alban's musicians decamping to Winchester, and Bath Abbey's assistant (who's been there less than two years) off to St Alban's.

The Church Times article reads as though it's the musicians largely to blame, and I see no sign that Trennier is resigning or being sacked. At least Ogle has fallen on her sword, even though it's only two months before her early retirement, which was announced a few months ago.

A lot of "searching for the positives" in this report, which doesn't seem to me to tell the whole story (but I am not connected to the place in any way so that is pure conjecture.)

Laters: here's the link to the bits of the report that the Bishop has deigned to allow us to read:

Interesting that Dr L is cited as being publicly silent on the matter. That should read "Dr L was subjected to a gagging order, which he respected scrupulously".

A bit of unfortunate phrasing in the cleric's covering letter:
The purpose of this Report is not to attribute blame, but to enable that to happen.
The enabling was supposed to be of the 'lessons learned' type mentioned in the previous sentence...

A comment to a Slipped Disc article last summer

A former, eminent Anglican priest, whom I chanced to meet professionally a few days ago, suggested that senior figures, especially Deans, in cathedrals and colleges, were merely an outlet for the view, coming from the very top, that excellent choral foundations “were an expensive irrelevance”. It is an increasingly credible theory.

I always favour the most simple explanation - jealousy or professional resentment . The choirs and DOM’s in most cathedrals are better known and more of a draw than the clerics and they know it. The COE is falling to pieces over child abuse ; as well as differing attitudes to homosexuality here and in Africa. I can’t believe the upper management spend more than a hour a year thinking about choirs . Whereas if I were a senior cleric in a Catherdral (wildly unlikely ) and had to put up with people coughing through my sermons while the choir got all the kudos I might get e bit Don Corleone as well.
One thing I’ve learnt from professional dealings with the COE is how out of touch, self important , and generally difficult to handle some but not all Cathedral top brass can be. Modern management techniques - team building , communication etc seem to have completely by passed them. Though to be fair my experience is some years out of date.

“This year’s Shrove Tuesday Pancake Race, organised by Winchester Rotary in partnership with Winchester Cathedral, makes a welcome return on Tuesday 4th March. The event starts at 12.30pm with entertainment and refreshments, including pancakes, available to purchase from the Cathedral mobile catering van, and the races start at 1.00pm.“

                        That's alright then. 🤔

Let's hope all associated with the shenanigans there were well shriven!

I was once a choir member and saw first-hand what was happening—high turnover of lay clerks, low morale, etc. I do feel that the powers that be are closing ranks, but I hope that, musically, things will turn a corner.

To this outsider it certainly seems like that. Church leaders sweeping the failings of their clergy under the carpet? Oh well, what's new?
