In The Times Diary today -
"Things are getting pointed in a very CofE way at Winchester Cathedral, where there are deep fears over the future of the choir. Last Sunday’s choral evensong included Psalm 35, with its lines about repelling those who plot one’s ruin, followed by Handel’s anthem Insanae et Vanae Curae about “vain and raging cares”. I’m told the singing was “wonderfully heartfelt”."

This interim position, starting after the departure of Dr. Andrew Lumsden at the end of July, comes with our full support and blessing.

The Very Reverend Jo Kelly-Moore, Dean of St Albans, stated, “For the last 26 years, Andrew Lucas has been leading excellence in music at St Albans Cathedral. Andrew is a superb musician, who is generous, collaborative, and kind. He is highly respected and well-loved by the whole Cathedral community and beyond. We know that Andrew will be a blessing to the music of Winchester Cathedral.”
Andrew Lucas expressed his excitement about this new opportunity: “Having worked for almost 27 years at St Albans Cathedral, where musical excellence has always been part of its daily life, I am honoured to be invited to maintain the long tradition of outstanding choral music in the daily worship of Winchester Cathedral. I look forward to providing support and continuity as the choirs, music staff, Chapter and the whole Cathedral community move into a new era with their next Director of Music.”
We are confident that Andrew will bring his exemplary skills and experience to Winchester, ensuring the continuation of their outstanding choral tradition. While we will miss his daily presence at St Albans, we celebrate this new chapter in his illustrious career and look forward to the mutual benefits this collaboration will bring."
Andrew Lucas certainly doesn't know me. I agree with the sentiments of the St Albans announcement, and from my limited knowledge of him - I wouldn't expect he has any need to put up with a grim working environment. His retirement was known about long before the Winchester situation cropped up.Comment

Very interesting article . I wonder whether the resignation of Mark Byford as non -executive director of the Cathedral Chapter has triggered this review ?
