    Two choirs? Is that unusual?

Looks as if there will be a case of musical chairs in the organ loft.

It's fairly unusual for BBC R3 CE, yes, BUT in local Cantab terms the KCC / John's joint service is a pretty standard fixture.

at about the time of the Easter festival I thought I read somewhere that the King's organ would be out of action for 8-9 months. Would this service have been recorded back then ?

As I understand it, Harrison & Harrison start dismantling the organ at the start of 2016, and will have it back for the start of the new university year in September '16.
The service was sung, and recorded yesterday (Thursday July 2nd).

Yes. H&H are already making new slider chests and other bits and pieces ahead of the game. So it should be an unusually quick turn-around for an organ of this size and location.

It's an annual event, and alternates between the two colleges.

I hope that fine tenor we saw in the carols last year is the soloist in the Coll. Reg. Nunc! Looking forward to it very much.

                      Reminder: today @ 3.30 p.m.
Of course you may have already heard it a few times since it has been posted on the KCC online page for days.

                        Predictably sleek and skilful.

I thought this was excellent. The combined trebles made a rich and polished sound, well supported by sensitive AT, and some wonderfully dark basses. The psalm singing was surprisingly unified given the differing house styles of King's and John's. The tenor solo in the nunc was a real treat. For me though, sharp organ noises aside (the weather?) the Parry was an absolute blow out; although this was only apparent when I decided to listen to the version recorded "in house" on the King's microphones. My guess is that the conductor employed senior trebles only for the "oh pray for the peace of Jerusalem" section. The result was as good a treble line as you will hear. The Te Deum felt a stretch too far after the Parry I thought though the ending to be suitably grand. Many congratulations to all, I felt I was listening to A choir not choirS. Perhaps a sign of the convergence of styles of the two institutions that I've noticed over the years.

...and most enjoyable! The sheer numbers allowed a certain breadth to be sustained. This really was a Rolls Royce sound. It was billed as having been 'edited'. I wonder what that meant?
