Am I right in thinking, that this is the first time the King's Carol Service has featured live on Radio 4? ... rather than Radio 3 (which seems to have Jazz Record Requests instead). A curious decision, on the face of it.

The new commission surely worth waiting for. Much appreciated.

No. This is the usual pattern. Live on R4 on Christmas Eve, repeated after 1pm on R3 on Christmas Day. Twas ever thus, as long as I remember! You have to wait until the repeat to hear all the voluntaries...

It's been broadcast live on Radio 4 or its equivalent (BBC National Programme, BBC Home Service) since 1928!

I specified live broadcast on Radio 4, Petrushka. Of course it was on the "national programmes" when their was no alternative, but I didn't remember the Christmas Eve service going out live on anything other than Radio 3, since the current rules applied. But it looks as if silvestrione is more on the ball than I am! I claim the mitigating factor of a Covid diagnosis yesterday, which has rather discombobulated me, temporarily!

The BBC National and BBC Home Service morphed together and into the current BBC Radio 4 in 1967. I certainly recall listening to the Service on Radio 4 in either 1968 or 1969.

Bad timing re Covid, hope you speedily recover.

You’ve still not made it to KCC, Petrushka? Dread to think how bad train services would be now!

                            One day, Alison...

The major problem is, of course, that it's impossible to get back home overnight and spending Christmas Day alone in a Cambridge hotel doesn't hold much appeal whichever way you look at it.

I did, however, attend an evensong at KCC with Cleobury in November 2017 which was wonderful.

That’s good news they’ll be on R3’s repeat. I was poised to turn up the volume for Dieu Parmi Nous, when the R4 announcer cut in….
