Steven Grahl to be Director of Music at Trinity

Just seen this - Michael Waldron (a former Trinity Organ Scholar - who held the fort impressively early in 2022 when Stephen Layton was indisposed) will be Interim DoM for the Michaelmas Term.
Professor Steven Grahl has been appointed Director of Music at Trinity College Cambridge, effective from January 2024. Currently he is Organist (Director

He’s a lovely chap and a fine musician, but he must be a brave man to take on this exceptional student choir which has reached almost unbelievable heights under the genius that is Stephen Layton. I wish Prof Grahl all the very best. He must be longing to emerge from the trying acoustics of CCC into the ideal space of Trinity chapel with its inimitable Metzler.

Well, someone’s got to do it K and this seems a good appointment IMHO. He takes over a superb instrument to work on just as Stephen Layton inherited a superb choir from Richard Marlow, as many cds bear witness.

Stepping into big shoes is always difficult. TCC Choir had reached a pinnacle almost impossible to surmount. But all the best to Prof Grahl.

Peterborough must be nervous, having lost their last two to Oxford colleges.

How’s Trinity doing under Michael Waldron? Well, very well indeed on this evidence, an anthem by the Estonian composer, Sisask.

A link to the CE of yesterday. Steven G often prefers composer themed services and this one had MacMillan and Purcell, both using imaginative choral effects to aid devotion.
Trinity’s psalm singing is heavenly as always and brilliant solos were scattered throughout the canticles. The choir is in great form so early in the term. A listen is highly recommended.
