I know nothing about modern English choral, so I'm quite looking forward to getting my ears around the Gabriel Jackson and James Whitbourn works, on my return from holiday.

Messiaen's Cing Rechants of 1948 was an important trailblazer in terms of extended vocal techniques since used often - but I expect that's going back a bit far for BO.

Not surprisingly, I would recommend this disc http://conviviumrecords.co.uk/x/rele...ude-of-voices/ - all the pieces were written in the last couple of years and set texts from or associated with the first world war. It's a collection of some of the best composers writing choral music today in the UK (plus one American). There's quite a variety of styles and all the composers managed to achieve that rare combination of music that is engaging, well written and approachable.

I was thinking of choirs a bit bigger than ferney's descriptionof 'small scale soloistic'.

What perhaps I should have said was that I was wondering about British modern choral composers, in the main (without ruling out others).

In my view a lot of the best/most interesting choral music is from Northern and, especially, Eastern Europe. In terms of this country, these are all very good:
