Ofca, just read this thread, it really surprises me. Llandod is usually such a 'genteel' conservative place and I'm really sorry that on your holiday to Wales you had to put up this crudeness. One might expect it at a rugby club do (not necessarily in Wales of course!) but that was well out of order for people who were on an inclusive tour. I'm sorry if it marred your holiday and it really reflects badly on Llandod and more importantly, the Choir, and the Welsh.

Don't worry - it won't deter us from returning to Wales - but we certainly won't be visiting that hotelagain, or any of the others owned and run by Grand UK Holidays. Interestingly, our most local coach operator uses the Metropole which, having 4 stars, presumably wouldn't countenance such goings-on.

I would very much hope that this was particular to this choir. Welsh Male Voice Choirs have been in the "entertainment" business for years and often have one of the choristers to act as a "front man" who often retell some interesting, amusing anecdotes about the choir and it's choristers. But this is the first time I've heard of a routine similar to that one. This is more of something that one would become accustomed to hearing at Embassy Club or any other such establishments. Quite embarrassing. I can only assume that this was a more informal event, although it still does not excuse the racism and inappropriateness of the material. Please do not tar all Welsh Male voice choirs with this brush.

P.S. I can recommend the Metropole

No tarring was intended and none will be carried out, I can assure you!
If only the individual concerned had taken his cue from Flanders and Swann's 'Song of Patriotic Prejudice', in which they take a good-humoured pop at, among others, the Welsh who '....sing/far too loud, far too often and flat'. (If you don't know the song, their take on the English is: 'What national song have we got? Jerusalem!')

As a member of Cornish Male Choirs, it is quite usual at concerts to have a Chairman, either provided by the venue or one of the choir members, who will tell the odd joke or anecdote. Normally the Chairman will have read the audience but I have to admit experiencing some cringeworthy moments.

A special meeting of the Choir Committee has been convened for this evening....and I've been told, indirectly, that the offending items will be removed from the programme 'even though nobody's ever complained about them before'.

The Committee 'met, took note of my complaint, regretted that we had been offended and apologised'.
And that is where I shall let the matter rest. Thank you all for your contributions.
