I hardly ever look in here but Drome and Wabbey are about the only things I've cottoned on to. But I'll hive off the folk etymologies so that both discussions can be pursued, if wished.

Although very far from being a specialist, I love the nicknames, mysterious provenance and all. On the old board, there was a phase of referring to a certain Cathedral in the west midlands as Erehdorf. I can't think why - muddled typing? transparent wish not to be too transparent? - but the absurd anagram comes to mind every time I drive north up the M5. Please don't iron out the in-jokes and private language. Every occupation on earth develops these quirks (railways provide a notably rich seam) and by and large, new enthusiasts adjust.

Possibly I instigated it, by asking an innocent question. I had not intended to impute anything to DracoM's use of "Drome", I was merely intrigued.
There are indoor and outdoor Boulodromes here, a coining from Velodrome, I assume.

(If I should use "impugn" rather than "impute" please feel free to correct me).

I think the current one is - but I have seen real ones there in the past.

I wonder what the protocol is. If the one there is naturally dead, I imagine it is OK to replace it with yours. But does the one that's never been alive assume the right to stay there forever?

When I first saw it years ago it was a real one. But definitely a plastic one when I was there last November. I wonder if it's the same one there now...

I've never heard anyone say Wabbey or Drome in real life, but I've read both here and 'cottoned on' to what was meant even though I'm an outsider. I imagine someone giving out the Twitter address of W. Abbey might well say wabbey, albeit with a small w.

This one wasn't plastic - it was one of those superior silk ones I think; it was a creamy colour and only the impossibly long stem gave it away.

Nothing wrong with being a little coterie - it's the inplication that everyone not in the coterie will be imtimidated and stay away. What stops me joining the discussions about CE is that I haven't a clue about anything and have nothing relevant to contribute.

I seem to recall some Classic FM presenter maintaining that it was 'elitist' to mention Opus numbers ("What's an Opus number?") as it would intimidate listeners and they'd feel excluded. The board IS for 'a little coterie' as far as I'm aware.
