George Dyson was, I think, music master* at Winchester College for a time. Hence the Dyson-fest.

*School music masters were not, as far as I recall, given the status 'Director of Music' until 40/50 years ago.....at a guess. And neither were cathedral O&Cs.

In a wider context, Dyson is, as you may have noticed, Composer of the Week.

It is also the 50th anniversary of his death on the 28th September 1964.

...and, lurking somewhere on my bookshelves is his 'Harmony, Counterpoint and Improvisation' (or something like that) at one time a seminal work for students.

I shall be bending an ear in an attempt to hear my godson among the basses...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

" Unable to bring you this broadcast for 'TECHNICAL REASONS' "???

What a fantastic let down. I hope there is as much rage behind the scenes in Winchester as here chez moi

I'm listening happily.... or is this a recording of something else? I missed the start (or more exactly, am at work so have it on very quietly.... )

EDIT: Actually - you're right now I listen properly: b*gger all Dyson

I will find out what's occurring.

For some totally inexplicable BBC reason it is about as far away from Dyson in the week of his anniversary and his BBC COTW portraits as they could have chosen. Explain the rationale behind that if you can.
It is a recording of New College from June 2009, in their utterly inimitable style, singing a service whose repertoire seems to be entirely Purcell.

... ah, that's why I'm enjoying it so much more than I was expecting to

How far did they have to look for s sub? Taken me three minutes on my archive to find Dyson in D sung on 3rd July 2012 at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford.
                          Grrrr x 2 !

We will hear Winchester Coll on Sunday @ 3 p.m.

                            EH requiring some shade.

Unlucky Winchester, but an unexpected pleasure to hear Purcell again from the Prof. (retired).
Looking forward to hearing Winchester on Sunday.

Very disappointing for Winchester Coll. but we will hear them on Sunday. I wonder if it will be on i-player before then? It would be the least the Beeb could do.

Anyway, it was great to have New Coll. as a substitute. I really enjoyed the service, waccy psalms and all. That first lesson, though.........
