This will, of course, be Peter Gould's last broadcast Evensong as he retires at Epiphany after over 30 years at Derby.

Quite a curious experience: the top line sort of came and went, sometimes so quiet either by accident or engineering balance that it very nearly disappeared now and then. They sounded far less certain with the Palestrina than with the Andrew Carter responses which were delivered with some gusto and confidence - nice accompanier here. Bit of a pity: disliked the Carter quite a lot, and was the soloist the precentor?? Hmm.

The Archer canticles were made to sound a tad tentative, but then came quite a nice, ethereal blending of what sounded like divisi trebs ably supported by the men.

I like Bairstow with probably a bit more beef than we got, but it was quite a big sing for this early in the term. Thanks to Peter Gould for nursing the choir through much over the years, and particularly for helping us share this fresh sounding service from a young sounding choir.

I must say I find the Carter responses a bit hard to take. One could discuss their musical merit...and they are clearly designed to be 'accessible' ....but they just don't work liturgically for me Nor would any other piece whose substance was so great as to overshadow the psalms and canticles. And the intoned collects at the end just seemed disconnected. I remember the sacred Barry telling me once that he didn't like doing the Howells responses because they were 'too much like a performance' I disagree with him about those, but the argument could surely be applied to Carter's.

But well done, Derby, and thanks for a stirring final hymn.

Yes, it was. He read the first lesson too.

On second hearing of the Archer canticles, I was struck by their airy lightness and happiness. Some corners, but nicely managed.
