    'The Choir' on R3

The Choir on R3 on Sundays.
    Ahem.

SMP i/c. R3's soundalike Radio 2 bits and pieces mash-up.
But I suppose if I use that term, the U12 programme-makers will get excited and think they've cracked it.
SMP at her very, very most typically marmite, IMO.

Weren't people complaining a little ago that British choirs' successes in international competitions never gets mentioned? Well there were plenty of mentions tonight (though, as far as I can see, everybody wins a prize at the World Choir Games.)

It was a special honour to be asked to write a piece in memory of Geraldine Atkinson and her words, written when she was only 12, are remarkably mature and very beautiful (and very musical).

Well. Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, Highland Games. These are all rather athletic in character. So at the World Choir Games, is there a class for (eg) singing a Bach Chorale while doing the high jump?

In my - no doubt very old fashioned - way, I should have thought Choir Competition might have been a more appropriate term.

There was a National Choir Competition in January 1974 or 75 which took place in the RAH. I think Sir David Willcocks was one of the judges. I do remember that the given test piece for the small choir class was Das Neugeborne Kindelein by Buxtehude, and that I was a member of the winning choir.

Promoters possibly think that by calling such a meet 'Games' it will make it seem all zeitgeisty.

A bit like 'meet' I guess

Ye Gods. Have we sunk to The Choir being about competitions?

                      I think they were.

                      Some people are never satisfied.

I don't think it's necessarily the same people. I would prefer hear good choirs singing well, rather than being dragged into a brass band contest or a football match.

Vinteuil - Brilliant!!! I'd like to frame that statement and have it blazoned across banners worldwide.

Fine tuning it a little, we may never find satisfaction, but we can seek contentment.
