    Magnifiscat and Funk Dimittis

Did anyone catch The Oxford Gargoyles on In Tune last week?

Faintly amusing; singing in unkind studio acoustics.

Possibly, just possibly, but NOT immediately after a 'proper' Anglican-Victorian Magnificat! It nearly sent me spinning off the road And putting aside road safety, it was a crass, completely meaningless 'contrast'.

      IMHO of course...

Can this piece be heard anywhere else online, now that it's gone off the all-too short-lived LA/iPlayer?

I don't know of a place to hear it online, but it is part of the Gargoyles' new CD (Tonehenge), available for purchase from their website: http://www.theoxfordgargoyles.com/shop/

The whole disc is well worth buying and hearing!

It was OK, but like that rather naff vogue for singing things like the Highway Code to Anglican chant back in the 1970s, it outstays its welcome pretty quickly. If you want scat singing, put some Ella Fitzgerald on.

Agreed, the humour doesn't travel well through the decades. I think the original Highway Code recording made a really big impact at the time, and people used to entertain themselves and others by chanting bits of fire regulations, recipes, contraceptive advice.....anything really; but I guess it would be met with an embarrassed titter nowadays.
