    The Choir 18.05.14

Sara Mohr-Pietsch explores the world of Choral Societies, with guests Ronald Corp and Richard Cooke. Film composer Debbie Wiseman also journeys with Sara through a selection of choral favourites. This week's Choral Classic is Elgar's Dream of Gerontius, whilst another amateur choral group is presented in Meet My Choir.
Er, didn't we experience SM-P's bleeding chunks from The Dream of Gerontius in a recent broadcast of this programme?

it was the Choral Classic on 26 January, so this could be a repeat or new chunks

after investigation I think it will indeed be a repeat in all respects of 26/1/14

The choral music world explored by Sara Mohr-Pietsch with composer Debbie Wiseman.

Oh dear. I recall that it was one of the worst presented programmes of all time.

At least no-one will be able to tweet, e-mail or text.

Puzzling: why repeat so soon after first tx? Don't get it.

R3's shortage of cash. Conspiracy theory: RW allowed R3's budget to drop so much further than the other music stations because it would make him popular? [Please, Sir, I can cut another few millions off Radio 3's budget?]. Will that stand up, HG?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

                Possibly a good call.

It's funny how foresight and experience is so often labelled as conspiracy theory.

No, DracoM's original question was why this particular edition is being rebroadcast "so soon" (i.e. why not an earlier one in today's repeat slot?)

Under conspiracy theory, that's easy to answer:- to rebroadcast an earlier programme might invite comparisons between the different styles of presentation.

                      Q. Why is today's The Choir a repeat?

                      I have a (conspiracy) hypothesis.

Last year, the RPS Awards 2013 was broadcast on Radio 3 on Sunday afternoon.
So, maybe the RPS Awards 2014 were pencilled in for this afternoon, in place of The Choir.
Then, it was considered that broadcasting the RPS Awards so soon before the live Young Musician Final at 7.30 would detract from this main BBC competion climax.
So, the RPS Awards 2014 were rescheduled to follow the excitement of the BBC Young Musician Final, leaving a hole in the afternoon schedule.
Hence, a rebroadcast of an earlier The Choir.

                      This is speculation!

Could be, but it doesn't answer Draco's question.

Speculation 12,304: Someone was ill and couldn't do a live programme, so they reached in for a recording and ...

                          Aren't there four repeats in a row - 13.00 - 17.30?

It was the same one - unfortunately exactly the same.

Two ideas come to mind: first: that it's easier to find a recent broadcast on the R3 archive (no trawling back through time - just select one from the "recent places" list); second: broadcast a programme with the same format and presentation to prevent adverse comparison with the dross now being put on.

On second thoughts: probably a combination of the points above.
