Thanks ff. His reply to Anna was appalling.

I had a look at a few cathedral websites re music. One is doing plainsong responses for the period, which seems rather a neat idea. A lot of Gibbons / Tallis / Byrd about too. Lovely stuff.

Much as I like Anglican chant, I quite like the idea of doing plainsong psalms during Lent. (We did this at my cathedral, moons ago...but not on Sundays). 1. It is suitably penitential 2. It makes the glorious burst into harmony all the more appealing when Lent ends and 3. I think singing plainchant is excellent discipline for a choir in terms of blend and of listening to each other. Altos sometimes get a bit miffed as they don't quite fit into the sceme of things. In my day they joined in the plainsong in baritone register.

        What is the Diversions forum?
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I'm feeling a bit bad about Bullock in D who started this thread in all innocent good faith. The Christian faith and the liturgical year is immensely important to me, but I'm not that bothered about Anglican cathedral music (although I'm happy to hear it in context.) That is why I was the first person to suggest a secular piece of music,. doing so in a frivolous spirit, although in no way being disrespectful of Lent or church music lovers. (I didn't make that last bit clear. Sorry.)

That may have inspired cellini to suggest his, in a rather different spirit.

I think making blanket condemnations of cellini's character is as bad as some of his posts.

I hope Bullock in D is not put off by all this: I see in an early post he asked us to be gentle with him. I'm sorry if I didn't appear. I hope he comes back.
