I'll have to be nice to MrsBBM!

I see it's on amazon prime, so I can listen today. Then the LSO have their recent Mahler 2 with Ssemyon Bychkov from a concert a few nights back on YouTube!! I will have to listen to that too! Oh my goodness! ll

Listening now to the Barshai. Gawd! Stunning or what? Yes!

Bear in mind too, that the 6th and 7th are played by the vintage-class mid-70s Leningrad Philharmonic, and that you may still be able to find audiophile remasters of Nos. 1 and 5 on the Audiophile Classics label.... https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mahler-KOND...r+5+kondrashin
(yes, this IS the same 5th that's in the boxset... very rare now)...

That 6th is probably the fastest (65'40) ever recorded, but only gains in its physical and emotional thrills and challenges...
I have a few of those Audiophile Classics issues, but would love to find that AC Mahler 5 disc - its one of the stand out performances of the Kondrashin set.

          But....
you miss the life-enhancing, music-enhancing qualities of a Gold CD...(a rich deep Gold, not the familiar Champagne of SACD...)...
The CD's so bright, I gotta wear ...

Hey mods, what gives with the quotes #92 - #94 here....? All getting a bit misattributed....

It does not help that this same Moscow recording from 1974 is credited to three different Orchestra names, "The USSR State Symphony Orchestra", "The Moscow Philharmonic" and "The USSR TV And Radio Large Symphony Orchestra".

Are the timps that bad in the Barshai as one Amazon reviewer suggests?

If you think that's confusing, try working this one out....

I'm sure there's some Melodiya apparatchik who's really enjoying this...

(I think the posts/quotes on this thread are operating like a Lutosławskian Chain...)

Heh, heh. Your quoting is pretty confusing too.

Thank you for this. This will be fine until I can track down one of those nice gold cd's ! I will have to learn how to download this stuff though - the one and only time I tried to download some music from a well known label it disappeared into the ether and I never did find it. I suppose their must be guides on the net for doing this kind of thing.

There does indeed appear to be a bug that has crept into the quote system.

                            Bloody auto correct!

Yes indeed but I do hope Forum Members Mahler fans have caught up with this performance. So worthwhile!

Ooh, I know!! I'm lumbered with this wretched Tablet, and the sheer waste of time devoted to overriding the suggested text (which it then puts in anyway!!!

Bychkow is a very good conductor indeed, and his Proms performance of the Verdi Requiem a couple of years ago was magnificent, so a Mahler 2 from him should be at the very least exciting. I shall seek it out once my Laptop is back from the repairers'!

Semyon Bychkov will be in Chicago Nov.3 a Sunday afternoon with Alissa Weilerstein and the Czech PO in the the Dvorak Cello Concerto, New World Symphony and a piece by Fibich. Just bought our tickets yesterday. Also purchased tickets for Gaetti and the Concertgebouw who have Mahler 4 on the program, in March of 2019.
I have been to both Amsterdam and Prague in the past 5 years and was bitterly disappointed to miss both of these Orchestras that were away touring. I guess the best way to catch them is to wait for them to come to you. Now, if they could only figure out a way to bring their Concert Halls with them...
