Mahler Symphony no. 9

Yes Petrushka, i had a look and there does seem to be a DVD. thankfully!! Although i do have the Abbado cycle of GM's symphonies, the lucerne versions do sound that extra special, to be well worth buying as well!

Sorry I meant it is not available on CD .I don't have a home cinema system and I don't like watching concerts on TV - the direction I generally find distracting.

I have to take issue with you Throps about the Barbirolli . It is important to bear in mind when listening to it how inexperienced then the BPO were as a Mahler orchestra and I blame any shortcomings on that rather than the interpretation.

I have just ordered the 1960 Rome account ams - sounds enticing.

I am firmly of the view though that nobody gets to the heart of the piece like Walter - his 1961 recording brings me close to tears whenever I hear it - it is an extraordinarily moving experience .

and the 1967 Klemperer Phil / New Phil recording on EMI (Indeed this recording first introduced me to this symphony.)

I mentioned it ! - It remains a very special account but the 1961 account is far better played and recorded - and whilst having a different emotional charge- is at an equally high level.

He does love the sound of his own voice, doesn't he Compare Bernstein's 'insights' with those of Carlos Kleiber - two people who used words to the same end, Bernstein's stated almost as 'fact', Kleiber's as momentary fantasy to convey/generate a mood.

In Mahler's Symphony No.9 in D Major I still highly regard the Barbirolli with the Berliner Philharmoniker recorded in 1964 at the Jesus Christ Church in Berlin/Dahlem. I have played movements of this at a number of Recorded Music Societies and it has always received praise.

That's the recording I have - but I haven't listened to it. I bought it after hearing the symphony performed by the BBCSSO. I'm almost afraid to listen to it on record as I don't think it will have nearly the same impact - especially the ending, which will simply be inaudible.

I would imagine so, it has been a top recommendation for a complete cycle for quite a few years. I only have a cycle conducted by Chailly - the Bertini recording I mentioned is a later live recording, not from the cycle.
