Originally posted by HighlandDougie View PostErr, the fact that they are with different orchestras would suggest that they are. The DG CD is with the BPO, recorded live in 1999 in the Philharmonie, and the Accentus DVD is with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, from live performances from 19 to 21 August 2010. As far as I know, the Abbado/Lucerne recording has never been released by Accentus in CD format. The Lucerne performance has an intensity which is not quite so present in the Berlin performance of ten years earlier."The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink

But there are four great performances with Berlin Phil, in my view, those with Karajan, Barbirolli, Abbado and Rattle. I have the Abbado/Lucerne DVD, which is astonishing. How they play for him! The string sections sway all as one as they respond, like a starling murmuration.

Agreed. I love this work, which I got to know with the Berlin Phil under Barbirolli. I remember thinking that there was something oriental about some of its themes, owing to their pentatonic nature, I think. It is extraordinarily beautiful and moving.

I have been waiting for BBM to weigh in and tell us if he has a CD of Abbado/Lucerne...however I just learned from Facebook that BBM is laid up with a high fever and is on antibiotics, as well as a 12 week quarantine, so he will be excused from rummaging through what must be a huge CD collection. Let us all wish him a speedy recovery.
