The CD was released on DG, the Blu Ray on EuroArt. That would imply different performances but isn’t conclusive...does any one know for certain?

Err, the fact that they are with different orchestras would suggest that they are. The DG CD is with the BPO, recorded live in 1999 in the Philharmonie, and the Accentus DVD is with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, from live performances from 19 to 21 August 2010. As far as I know, the Abbado/Lucerne recording has never been released by Accentus in CD format. The Lucerne performance has an intensity which is not quite so present in the Berlin performance of ten years earlier.

One shouldn't forget Abbado's VPO recording of the 9th which is also on DG and is a very fine performance indeed. One of my favourite Mahler 9ths.

When I googled it I found a reference to a CD of the Ninth featuring aAbbado Lucerne, an old reference on the third page of Google. This is the CD that I presumed BBM has in his collection, and then the question became was it a CD issue of the video performance. Perhaps BBM could help us here.

Such a great piece but not I find an easy listen at home. My all-time favourite performances remain Walter in both the 1938 from Vienna just before the Anschluss and the 60's CBS recording with the fascinating rehearsal included.

I agree, I ration my listening, these days about one or two a year. So powerful and overwhelming, it needs an occasion really, a live concert.

But there are four great performances with Berlin Phil, in my view, those with Karajan, Barbirolli, Abbado and Rattle. I have the Abbado/Lucerne DVD, which is astonishing. How they play for him! The string sections sway all as one as they respond, like a starling murmuration.

Agreed. I love this work, which I got to know with the Berlin Phil under Barbirolli. I remember thinking that there was something oriental about some of its themes, owing to their pentatonic nature, I think. It is extraordinarily beautiful and moving.

Plenty of references to the CD of Abbado/Lucerne in Bruckner 9 but Mahler 9? Maybe you could post the URL?

I still love the old studio Haitink Mahler 9, perhaps the best of that Concertgebouw cycle.

Real Mahlerian atmosphere and tensions not underplayed.

In the same bracket as his Debussy recordings.

I did find his recent LVB Ninth rather dull.

I have been waiting for BBM to weigh in and tell us if he has a CD of Abbado/Lucerne...however I just learned from Facebook that BBM is laid up with a high fever and is on antibiotics, as well as a 12 week quarantine, so he will be excused from rummaging through what must be a huge CD collection. Let us all wish him a speedy recovery.

Thanks RFG. Not too bad today. I do have Abbado/Lucerne!
