I don't like the recorded sound of the later Kubelík recordings (having listened to all of no.1 and some bits and pieces from the others), it seems very distant and unfocused when one of the most attractive aspects of the DG ones is that everything is so clear and finely balanced. So, a bit of a disappointment for me.

An outstanding Mahler 1st
I've just discovered a truly terrific performance on youtube of the 1st symphony featuring one of my favourite orchestras, the Bavarian Radio Symphony. The playing is disciplined but emotionally committed throughout, and there are some outstanding contributions from individuals, especially the principal horn.

Reviewers put Solti at the top of the pile, but that doesn't mean we all have to agree with them. Solti is good, but so is Kubelik. In one version at least Kubelik has some very jazzy sounding trumpets which as I recall slide around quite sleazily. Brilliant. I don't think anyone else does those passages that way. The Youtube video version looks like a live performance - with an audience that is - though there's not too much sign of an audience. A small technical point - if I listen on my laptop (Apple MacBook Pro) the fans kick in and make a noise, but an iPod Pro doesn't add any such background.Comment

I've now had a chance to dip into this and judging from Kubelik's appearance I'd place it at round the same time as I saw him in the Mahler 1 as mentioned above.(ie 1979/1980).

Kubelik with Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks recorded Mahler 1 live in 1979 on Audite and also in the studio recording in 1967 on DG. They were both recorded at Hercules Hall, Munich and although both accounts are admirable I prefer the live recording on Audite.
