    Favourite Bruckner symphony recordings?

I would be very interested to see your favourite interpretations of each Bruckner symphony, from 00 through to 9.

My loyalties to Karajan, Giulini, Jochum et al have been tempered of late through exposure to other views, such as those of Venzago and van Zweden (though I would not go as far as to say there has been any significant displacements!).

So let's have your line-ups and I shall weigh in with mine when I have listened afresh to one or two young pretenders

Karajan and Jochum are my favorites, but seek newer experiences. Have you tried Gunter Wand? Celibidache? Barenboim? Justin Bieber (just kidding)?

An impossible question for me ... I even can't decide on my favourite Bruckner symphony never mind my favourite recordings, especially as the choice is so huge and impressive, and then there are all those original versions, valid/semi-valid revisions, doctored versions and various editions.

          PASS! ...

I love Bruckner and I listen to his music a lot and attend performances of his music as often as I can.

At any given moment in time I have particular favourite recordings which, as I imply, changes from time to time. This particular list is valid until end June 2016!

00 - Don't listen to it often and I'm Not familiar enough with it to have a preferred recording.
            0 - ibid
1 - Tintner, Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Naxos.
2 - Giuilini, VPO 1974. Testament (I tend to unthinkingly pull this one off the shelf whenever I want to listen to #2).
            3 - Knappertsbusch, VPO 1954. Testament.
            4 - Celibidache, MPO. EMI.
5 - Sinopoli, Staatskapelle Dresden. Deutsche Grammophon.
6 - (for the last few years, Horst Stein) Norrington, Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart des SWR. Handler Classic.
            7 - Haitink, Concergebouw. Decca.
8 - Karajan, VPO. Deutsche Grammophon.
9 - (For me, this is a 3 movement symphony) Karajan, BPO 1966. Deutsche Grammophon.

A rather conservative list, I'd say.

Edit: If I consider my preferred cycle, it'd be from Wand (Sony), Jochum (Dresden) or Karajan (only Karajan featuring in the single symphony list).

Couldn't put together a full cycle as I don't particularly like 00 thru 4 at the moment, but
                5 - Dohnányi, by miles.
                6 - Norrington or Sawallisch
                7 - Herreweghe
                8 - Païta, or perhaps Jochum/Bamberg/St. Florian (1982)
9 - Rattle and not just for the finale. (Basically Karajan except with better playing from the BPO and better sound.)

                I'm a massive weirdo.

edit: 1874 version of the 4th - Young, I think, not that there's a huge amount of choice. I do like the 1874 finale (rough-edged, clumsy, bordering on genius) and rarely if ever listen to the rest of the symphony. (The standard 1880 version holds very little interest for me atm.)

                  I'll say ditto to this.

                  00 - Never heard it
                  0 - Chicago SO/Solti
1 - Lucerne Festival Orchestra/Abbado (Vienna version), VPO/Abbado (either recording - Linz version)
2 - Regular forumites will know I have difficulty with this one, Nevertheless. Leipzig Gewandhaus/Blomstedt
                  3 - VPO/Haitink
4 - Concertgebouw Orchestra/Jochum. A live 1975 recording on the Tahra label. Superb
5 - VPO/Karajan. Live 1969 performance on the Andante label
                  6 - Dresden Staatskapelle/Haitink
                  7 - VPO/Böhm, A live 1976 performance on the Andante label
8 - VPO/Karajan. A towering performance in his last recording of the work.
9 - VPO/Karajan. A live 1976 performance once available on DG. One of the greatest Bruckner performances I've ever heard. This ought to be never out of the catalogue.

A less than run of the mill list perhaps and I'm not sure of the availability of some of them in case anyone wishes to follow up.

Is it possible to get the Jochum Concertgebouw at a reasonable price?

I spent £25 on a 2nd hand copy following a recommendation here (from you?). It's simply stunning although the Furty got it by a whisker in my list!

Still available, at not too steep a price - and well worth the investment: it is an awe-inspiring reading! http://www.amazon.co.uk/Symphony-9-A...iener+bruckner
