There are two early versions of the 7th from Karl Böhm: Vienna Philharmonic in 1943 and Staatskapelle Dresden in 1944.

Günter Wand rules himself out in my view by not only omitting the disputed cymbal clash but also the timpani at the slow movement climax. There's still plenty of weight but I wish he hadn't done it.

I'm going to have another listen, amongst others, to Horenstein with the BPO from 1928. Was that the first ever Bruckner symphony recording?

Do you really have to list them all, Alpie? What a horrible amount of work that must be.
Why not just have the rest of us chime in on our favorites.

My favorite is Karajan/Berlin on EMI, which I prefer to his later VPO recording. I also have Wand/Cologne, Janowski/Suisse Romande, Jochum/Dresden and Masur/Leipzig. I haven't listened to the last 2 for years so perhaps I will spin them this weekend.

Apparently not as long as 13 years. Time flies when when you are listening to great music and discussing it with like minded freinds.

Rather to my surprise I find there is much to enjoy in the version by the BBCSSO and Donald Runnicles on Hyperion.

Another absorbing recent account is Stanislaw Scrowaczewski's recorded live with the LPO.

JD usually comes over as more of an academic than a record collector: but that's what he is I guess!

Big name conductor and orchestra is my inexact prediction.

Conductors generally accorded first names, I see, with Furtwangler, Haitink and Barbirolli the honourable exceptions!

A mention here for another favourite version - there really are some good 'uns aren't there? - Solti and the Vienna Philharmonic in a superb typical 1960s Decca recording.

We used to have a VHS recording of Solti conducting the work at the Proms, a towering performance not matched by the subsequent - a few years later - CD from Chicago.

I wonder if the notorious Colin Davis Bavarian RSO version will get a mention. He reverses the inner movements (he also did so at the proms in 1989 ish)

The piece does feel a little unbalanced as published but this seems like an odd idea to me!

...and you can't get much better than that.

I didn't think that worked at all. I've never really had a problem with the structure and only a bad performance would leave me feeling short changed in the finale.

Always liked Haitink's crisp & urgent early way with this, 1966 or 1972 live...

But if I were to play it now, only one choice: Venzago/Basel SO, with its glistening tonal sheen and transparency, and such a daring, imaginative approach to shaping and shading of phrase and paragraph...

It's brave reviewer etc., etc., they should follow the G's Collection approach and have a few different categories...(historical, classic, radical etc...)
