I long believed, as I was taught at school, that sarcasm was the lowest form of wit. Exposure to this forum has convinced me otherwise. The pun is way below it - in the relegation zone of the Conference (South).

"People who make puns are like wanton boys that put coppers on the railroad tracks. They amuse themselves and other children, but their little trick may upset a freight train of conversation for the sake of a battered witticism."

Oh, I didn't know that. Very good! I shall try to memorise it and use it (accredited to both Holmes and you, of course).

Just came across the below, which caused brain freeze followed by befuddlement and finally caused me to laugh loudly.

Take a look at the piece, the cast, and then... the conductor.

          Cognitive dissonance or what?

Yes, forty years ago dear old Long Leif conducted Franco Corelli in Boheme.

Do we think anyone got home before midnight?

Leif has more than one Boheme to his name . According to the fascinating Met archives he has done 27 for them ! They obviously liked him and they don't enjoy big overtime bills..
Some of the casts are mouth - watering..
