After all this, I was looking through the Barbican programme... and discover that Rattle will be humming through Bruckner 8 with the LSO on 15th April 2016. Preceded by a Messiaen piece before the interval.

Don't think Leif will ever be allowed to programme more than one thing in a concert ever again! Not by Radio 3 anyway...

....which would be a shame as on the night I really enjoyed the Bruckner motets as well as the symphony - they had the merit of both being short and not rising above mezzo forte .

Yes - but the programme was put together with an entirely different conductor in mind.

Sure, but I doubt that the Bruckner 8 will discourage BBC from broadcasting concerts conducted by Leif Segerstam, especially as his interpretations of Sibelius, Nielsen, Pettersson and others are not known for their unusually lengthy durations or indeed for any other eccentricities!

Which will make it, IIRC, the fourth Bruckner 8 at the Barbican in 2 years.

Segerstam is noted for his performancesof Nielsen which he must surely have been predestined to give in the light of that composer's well-known assertion that "Music is the sound of Leif".

Perhaps Segerstam will next turn his attentions to Vaughan Williams, although that might prompt certain detractors to ponder the question as to whether it would be safe to have Leif conduct Rafe...

Leif and let Leif, I say.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                  Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

And to think that the now Damed Esther Rantzen could have introduced him to British television audiences as long ago as 1973 when he was only 30 years of age!

Whilst beeches are perhaps not quite the most common tree in his native Finland, it is said that Leif's a beech sometimes (though not by me, I hasten to add!)...

He could perhaps launch his RVW series with the Fantasia on GreensLeifs...

                      I think you're thinking of That's Leif, aren't you?

Can't see what the problem is. I've enjoyed his live performance, I couldn't be without his two (one very slow) Sibelius cycles, that recent B8 was awesome, I really like the few symphonies of his own hand that I have on BIS. I suppose you could say Leif's been good to me.

"Correct" (as Magnus Magnusson would have said)...

So now we have turned Beef Oven in to Leif Oven, but not quite yet... ferneyhoughgeLeifte?

Well, clearly we have not all felt the Breath of Leif upon us...

Actually Petroc was pronouncing it to rhyme with 'Rafe'...so perhaps the message to the BBCSO should be: Keep the Leif!
