Yes, I thought someone might react thus. But one can set aside Scruton's oft-galling conservative views and concentrate on his musicological musings, which are often (not always) pertinent. I encountered him via this excellent book: Aesthetics & Music (Andy Hamilton)

After hearing the Simone young recording of Symphony No.3, I absolutely bowled over by this one!! Strongly advise forum members to hear this!

I use Spotify Premium, mostly for exploring repertoire, etc or if we go away. Like exploring the various Bruckner and Buxtehude recordings I am playing this week, amongst others! As with the Simone Young, is a case in point. Sometime today I hope to listen to the Yanick Nezet-Sequin.

I have Abbado and Jochum(complete cycle), in Symphony No.1, and 2, but was wondering about other recordings there are? Just seeking forum members advice! :)

Yes - I really must stop worrying and learn to love streaming. But I just don't listen as closely to streamed Music (?is that the right expression?) as I do to a CD that I have taken off a shelf, out of its case, put in a machine - the physical activity and the sight of light rainbowing off the disc, and the look of the booklet cover; it all sets me up for a completely different attitude to listening. (There's a similar difference between listening to a broadcast concert as opposed to the rigmarole of actually going to a venue to hear it - except that there's the occasional enticement of seeing a piece I've wanted to hear in concert announced on the listings - the preparation there is important.)

I am similarly ambivalent towards streaming. I think it has something to do with the 'discovery/gathering' behaviour that many of us have, which is ruined by instant access and ‘non-ownership’, if you get my drift.

BTW, regarding Bruckner 1-3, Karajan’s BPO performance on DG keeps coming back to me, no matter how far I stray and irrespective of its less than ‘correct’ candidature.

- intensely powerful and astonishingly moving performances. (I think the only times Herbie ever conducted Nos 1 & 2 were for these recording sessions - gets to a core of the works, even so.)

I'm not an admirer of Blomstedt - so many disappointments in my purchasing past - so I'm afraid I haven't given it any attention.

Which just goes to show what a prejudiced pratt I'd been!

Have you heard Simone Young's recording of the 2nd. Tempted as I was to listen via the YouTube posting, I have her boxed set on order (due for U.K. release this Friday) so will wait for that. Given her recording of the first version of the 8th, I am expecting good things.

I admire some of Simone Young's readings, but given that Oehms have the nasty habit of releasing the individual discs in hybrid SACD format, and revert to just RBCD for the collective boxset, I will have to pick and choose among the single discs.

I see your point, Beefy but those of us who have limited storage space and or budget, with like me who have Spotify but still buy CD's, music streaming is a godsend.
