Barbirolli's Bruckner 8 from those last weeks of his life in 1970 is fantastic but I like Bruckner with energy that does not become becalmed . It is up there with the King's Lynn Elgar 1 from his very last days.

It was the Monitor documentary - still available on You Tube I think - 1960s Manchester and Salford look pretty grim.Fascinating programme including him whipping the RNCM Orchestra into passionate playing of part of Tchaikovsky 4.

The Halle's rehearsal hall seen on the documentary was the old Zion chapel in Hulme. Grim its surroundings seemed when the film was made but at least there was some community spirit. By the time that I was going there regularly (when working as an extra or deputy with the Halle and, later, also Opera North used it occasionally) the surrounding houses had been replaced by a complex of flats (I was going to say blocks of flats but this does not seem to be an accurate description) which might have had more mod cons inside but in other respects were a darn sight more grim. It was not unusual to see the police chasing people along the landings and security guards had to be hired to watch the musician's cars. Once only one guard was available and he refused to get out of his van on his own - he said that he would just keep and eye out and radio for help if it was needed. Just up the road was/is the old Hulme Playhouse which the BBC used as a studio for the Northern Dance Orchestra and its successor the Northern Radio Orchestra. This was opposite what is now called a 'challenging' school; I well remember the day when some of its pupils amused themselves by dancing on the cars in the car park; the semi-literate men in peaked caps who were very good at demanding to see your pass when you went in in the morning decided that discretion is the better part of valour and left it to the players to go out and chase them away.

As an amusing aside - how many of the Manchester audience would have believed the sight of the late Martin Milner (leader of the Halle on that film) playing the fruit machines in the Sir Henry Royce pub across the road? Certainly the film brings back many memories - few of the players in shot are still alive. I know that it is getting away from Bruckner 8 but have a look at this:

The late Syd King on 1st cornet - cheeks blown out in the way that we have told countless children not to do; a wonderfully old fashioned Lancashire character who used to bring his grandson for his trumpet lesson at the Northern School of Music and carefully comb the boy's hair before he went in so that he was clean and tidy for his teacher the late Cecil Kyd. Now they are usually designer-scruffy when they come for their lessons! Sorry, I will stop now - back to Bruckner!

I'm afraid that Bruckner does for me what Mahler does for some others. Listening to it is a bit like getting a migraine !

Nearly; someone agrees that Giulini's live BPO is better than his VPO performance and BBM remembers watching a telly programme about John Barbirolli conducting the 7th!

It was re-shown back in 1992 when Alan Bennett was allowed to take over BBC2 for one Saturday evening, iirc.

Seems I ordered the Venzago the same day I posted this last year.

Added the Philips (duo) Haitink PO last year and the Giulini BPO live. And the Gielen cycle that was a real bargain as a download. I haven't investigated the Jaap van Zweden.

Having read through the whole thread again, I decided to buy the Haitink live RCO. I've never heard it but Alison likes it so I should be alright!

Thanks. Your YouTube suggestion led me to this performance of the 9th from 1961. JB doesn't hang around in the first movement. And it's so refreshing to hear the un-hyped announcer giving concise information.
