Do any of the the people on this forum actually listen to Radio 3?? Or other classical music stations?? Just asking.

Is that the classic FM vs Radio 3?

I listened to half of tonights recital from Wigmore Hall, on my drive home. Beethoven Op111.
          Does that help?

Thing is with CDs you get to hear what you choose. On R3 you often get what some marketing bod thinks other people might want to hear, if they don't find the tone of the presenter too challenging.
          or something.

Incidentally, lots of people think that this board performs part of the functions that R3 used to hold do.

Its where I come to learn about music.

Most 'Live in Concerts', many 'Afternoon on 3s', much from TtN, many Lunchtime Concerts, ... , but not 'Breakfast', 'In Tune' and most editions of 'Essential Classics'.

Stuff like in tune and breakfast I find cringeworthy, just my opinion though.

Yes, like with TV and DVDs
But then don't you ever buy a CD because you heard that particular piece on the radio first?

I only watch footy and music on the telly, really.

Yes, hearing music new to me on the radio and rushing out to buy it is very special to me. I was brought up with John Peel shows.

But unfortunately daytime R3 doesn't perform that function for me, and evenings and weekends I can use more profitably learning from music recommended by Board members, or that I can discover myself.
I'm sure I miss a lot by not listening to Hear and now, Late Junction, TTN, etc more often, but when some techno bod enables me to "listen again" in my car, that will be resolved !

Like Bryn, for me the programmes I avoid at any cost are the ones between Through the Night and Composer of the Week as well as In tune. The programme I mostly listen to -i.e. through iPlayer- is Through the Night, closely followed by Afternoon on three, as these programmes are most likely to broadcast repertoire which is not very well known, and the presenters (especially in TtN) are knowledeable as well as avoiding the mad drivel, self-importance and tweeting-madness-promotions heard between 0700 and midday. Hear & Now is IMO unmissable, though the quality varies slightly, but is never uninteresting. The same applies to the Early Music Show as well as the Jazz programmes.
For the rest: I prefer my own music collection.

Oh indeed. I am somewhat addicted to the 4th, and the very fact that it was only known in the 2 piano arrangement for so long was enough to prompt me to want to hear it. It was first performed by the composer and his friend Mieczysław Weinberg (the pair of them also recorded the composer's 2 piano version of the 10th, which I have on LP).

That was the case when I first started listening to classical music on Radio 3, because there were better programmes that played CDs. Now most (not quite all - e.g CD Review) of the best programmes - LtC, Lic and TTN aren't playing CDs anyway. The ones playing CDs are 80% tailored for people who don't listen in the hope that they will: well-known works being regularly recycled, light entertainment. Not a lot for the serious classical listener/CD collector these days.

Many times in the past, Coco. Alas, it's not often it happens now since I know so much of the repertoire.

Be reasonable, ff. The money to pay for Those huge executive salary/pay offs have to come from somewhere.

Off topic, pg (is this the moment to say that we're doubling the membership subscription, erm, just before Chrissie?

Which is a good argument for more Lachermann on R3
