    Lloyd, Cyril (1951-2017)

An interesting composer whose music I first heard many years ago, much influenced by Peter Maxwell Davies in those days. Well worth investigating and he's still around I understand.

          Dear All,

Cyril Lloyd is a Professor at the Royal Academy of Music, and composer in residence at Sutton Grammar School amongst a number of other engagements. He is an established composer of large-scale symphonic (I believe 8 so far, but could be wrong) and choral works, but I'm afraid I don't recognise the Peter Maxwell Davies influence any longer!

          Kind Regards,

          Nick.

It looks as if we have welcomed Mr Lloyd as our latest member. It will be good to hear an update on his work.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I can confirm that Cy Lloyd is still composing. I've known him since we attended the same grammar school in the 1960s! Personally, I can't recollect a Maxwell Davies influence in his music over the years, though. His style has certainly become more traditional as the years have progressed and he is currently working on a 7th symphony. In fact, I was listening to the 3rd movement (which I received by email yesterday) this afternoon (merely on Sibelius) - a waltz.

7 symphonies, eh? I know he has always thought on a garnd scale. I'm told that while fellow first degree students submitted short compositions for their final "exercise", C.L. composed a grand opera.

Cyril Lloyd is an Inspiration to British classical music and composition, pure genius.

Mr. Lloyd sounds an interesting composer and I regret that I had never heard of him before. Can I easily get to hear some of his music? I have not yet tried Youtube but will do so; but do any of you know of any other website that will help me?

I hope Mr Lloyd has better luck than Joseph Holbrooke who wrote many symphonies, choral works and songs. Beecham and other conductors thought highly of him but his interesting and complex works were rarely published or performed and he now seems to be forgotten.

I confess to ignorance of this composer (and I've only just seen this thread for the first time) but, on the assumption that he was still alive and working five years ago, the dates must be wrong; indeed, they appear to relate to another Cyril Lloyd who wasn't a composer at all.
