I've known it since schooldays, but I often think that if I came across it 'cold', I wouldn't have the faintest idea who wrote it.

Yes - this was how I understood it; that it was rather Bridge who introduced Britten to Ireland, rather than the other way round.

Indeed! Confirmation from Britten's Diaries: the first time Ireland is mentioned is 19th June, 1930 (two-and-a-half years after he started lessons with Bridge) - and editor John Evans states that it was "on Bridge's recommendation [that] he was to study composition with Ireland". He also mentions that Bridge's London home was "in Kensington, within walking distance of the [RCM]" - so it's not impossible that Bridge and Ireland had some sort of communication.

Yes, you're absolutely right, Mary. A slap on my wrist for going online before I'm properly awake, and a thank you for correcting me.

Thanks Ardcarp! Wow! Yes, I remember this work. Saw that very performance! Big forces as well! But what originality, imo.

These Things Shall Be is certainly my favourite bit of Ireland - I have the Barbirolli recording. My music teacher at school was a great fan. I was 12 years old when Ireland died, and wasn't aware of his existence until the following morning, when the hymn chosen for school assembly was "My Song is Love Unknown". We were told of the composer's death before singing the hymn - quite unprecedented.

Another fave is a tiny piece for treble voices, "It is a thing most wonderful" otherwise known as Ex Ore Innocentium. It verges on the saccharine, but as it has so many associations for me, I can hardly hear it without the odd tear welling up!

Hard to believe it's the same composer as works discussed above.

He also wrote some very effective secular solo songs...different again.

One of my most favourite composers.
I have lots of his music in my collection but it's the chamber and piano stuff that really floats my boat.
From the early Sextet to the Piano Sonata and miniatures,String Quartets.....
If the Cello Sonata's slow movement doesn't melt your heart then I do declare that you are made of stone

Well ... it's in the spirit of the Composers Thread to have all such information handilyilyly packaged here for ease of consultation, so I'll copy the Posts to here.
