    Sciarrino, Salvatore (b 1947)

I don’t know if there’s any interest in this composer here apart from me - I must say, I find his music fascinating and moving, all of it (apart maybe the transcriptions!) I prefer his more minimalist (à la Feldman) things like Il suono e il tacere and Sui Poemi Concentrici to any other long form minimalist music I think.

My main reason for starting this thread is to say that I bought the French translation of Grazia Giacco’s book recently, and it was a good purchase, as far as I know there are no books in English which have much to say about his art.

Sciarrino is possibly the only composer whose orchestral music attracts me as much, if not more, than his smaller scale pieces. I may be the only person to say this, but if anyone’s curious about his stuff, and wants to dip their toe in the water, I don’t think they could do better than Tito Ceccherini’s CD

Though there’s plenty of wonderful vocal music and indeed chamber pieces. I don’t know the operas at all.

Thanks for the neophytes' recommendation. Of course I've heard of Sciarrino but have never got round to checking out any of his stuff.

Might be an idea to put his last name first in the thread title.

I'm an admirer of Sciarrino - 'Recitativo Oscuro' (on the above disc that Mandryka recommends) gets a regular outing, as does 'La Bocca, Il Piedi, Il Suono' (Lost Cloud Quartet) - to name a couple of favourites.

I can't resist asking you, given your moniker, what you make of the piano sonatas. 'La Bocca, Il Piedi, Il Suono' is nice, I agree.
