I'll kick things off by saying that I'm enjoying reading the chapter in Zubin Kanga's doctorate on Z/K

and that I was in a discussion about Seven Sacred Motets where someone said that Finnissy uses non-western scales, harmonies and other things (sorry -- you know what I mean!) there. Does anyone know if it's true? Or is it "in the style of", a pastiche maybe, of, let's say . . something early from Europe.

Perhaps someone could change the thread title to 'Finnissy, Michael' just for the sake of consistency and ease of referencing?

But your description of the Seven Sacred Motets sounds very intriguing.

Other pieces of Finnissy I like include Red Earth, the String Trio and the English Country Tunes (which ought to be reissued, or rerecorded). I also have a CD of his Gershwin arrangements which is nice.

I love Richard Jackson’s voice - he’s the baritone in the track about the battle of Maldon. He did another Finnissy piece which I find really very moving, it’s about suffering from AIDS when it was fatal, called Unknown Ground.
