Marcel Quinet was born at Binche (Hainaut) in 1915.
He began his musical studies at the Mons Conservatory and then transferred to the Brussels Conservatory. Then he studied composition with Absil, and won the Belgian Prix de Rome in 1945.
In 1976 he was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Belgium.
Quinet’s music is distinguished by formal clarity and the absence of lyrical effusion; his objective art has affinities with that of Hindemith.
Evolving from polytonality to atonality, his music remained clear in timbre and texture.
