    Schoenberg. Pierrot Lunaire.

I picked up a cd of this work performed by Christine Schäfer with Pierre Boulez directing The Ensemble InterContemporain on DG. I didn’t know this piece at all but found it oddly compelling.

This fascination gave me the excuse to buy PatKop’s new recording as well as Jane Manning with the Nash Ensemble under Sir Simon. I’m sure others will follow as funds allow.

Does anyone has recommendations or advice for a newbie to this work?

Not much advice to give, but I can recommend this, which I listened to not that long ago:

Seconded. The main problem with this piece consists in the wide divergence of views on how the vocal part is supposed to be interpreted. I tend to go for the rough pitch approximation approach tilted towards the speech end of the spectrum rather than quasi-singsong, hitting the pitch indications directly.

I like this work very much. I have often wondered if it might also appeal to fans of Barry White - I'm not being facetious: I think there are very real lines of connection.

I dare not beyond pointing in the direction of Mr White's videos on youtube.

Barry White could certainly have given us an unforgettable performance of Ode to Napoleon.

One of life's great what-ifs. He could certainly have sold out the Albert Hall with it.
