Rather worryingly, after I failed to provide any suggestions as to what might prove an acceptable but unusual birthday present this year. my better half has twice asked me, for no apparent reason, what would be the minimum number of recordings of the complete Ring cycle that would enable 'somebody' to venture in a meaningful way into an area of classical music which that 'somebody' has spent most of his life studiously avoiding ....

A HIPP really should be recorded at the Festspielhaus, which makes one of the 1950s live recordings a good choice. Krauss for a great cast, great conducting, very limited sound but cheap; Keilberth for a great cast, good conducting, excellent sound for the time but expensive.
