I hadn't realised bondage was included in RW's peccadilloes!

Ernest skates over that aspect of Wagner’s life - I suppose some one has written one.

Rather worryingly, after I failed to provide any suggestions as to what might prove an acceptable but unusual birthday present this year. my better half has twice asked me, for no apparent reason, what would be the minimum number of recordings of the complete Ring cycle that would enable 'somebody' to venture in a meaningful way into an area of classical music which that 'somebody' has spent most of his life studiously avoiding ....

... I think you shd say 'somebody' is waiting for a proper HIPP recording. That'll delay things for quite a time yet, I expect

Do you feel an improper HIPP recording to be a more likely possibility?

That could do the trick! I fear that my suggestion that 'somebody' might like to start with just one of the four, or some 'bleeding chunks', has been tacitly dismissed on the grounds that it reflects a lack of ambition.

Unfortunately, I can't swim, and I wouldn't DARE insult RW by merely paddling close to the bank.

The journey is good though with Birgit and Wolfgang, guided by Georg! I find the main problem with purchasing The Ring is that the inconsiderate record companies can provide you with the music but not the required listening time which with over the years of retirement and supposed spare time of lockdown I still haven’t found.

I've listened all through to quite a few recordings of the Ring and I always come back to HvK, that recording just sounds like I imagine the music to sound in some ideal space with perfect balance within the orchestra and between orchestra and voices. Some have said that one or other aspect of casting isn't so great, but for me it isn't about individual singers but a vision of the whole thing and I don't think anyone else has made that real to the same degree.

It was the first Ring I bought on LP and I still prefer it to any other version largely because I think HvK was a better Wagner conductor than Solti(though there are others better than HvK ) and the recorded sound of the BPO has never been matched. However there are definite singer drawbacks. Also and I know this is rank heresy I don’t like the sound of Birgit Nilsson’s voice on Decca.

                            .

... yes, another vote for Karajan here too.

I also like Clemens Krauss [1953] a lot

Rattle lead the OAE in Das Rheingold at the Proms in 2004. Not revelatory as I recall.

A HIPP really should be recorded at the Festspielhaus, which makes one of the 1950s live recordings a good choice. Krauss for a great cast, great conducting, very limited sound but cheap; Keilberth for a great cast, good conducting, excellent sound for the time but expensive.

                                ... I agree : I was there, and disappointed.

I was still more disappointed that they didn't even try to do the rest of the Cycle on HIPP lines
