Myaskovsky,Nikolai Yakovlevich (1881-1950)

I’m a big admirer of this composer.
I read somewhere (might have been our old friend Roehre)that he is considered by experts a sort of bridge between Tchaikovsky and DSCH,Prokofiev especially as far as his Symphonies are concerned.
There are so many great pieces amongst all those Symphonies,Quartets and Piano Sonatas IMO.
Anyway I’ve just seen that his 6th Symphony,maybe his greatest composition,will be programmed next year by the BBC Philharmonic

I only know his 6th symphony and 13th string quartet, both are superb. I would welcome a view on a good performance-recording of the symphony as my Marco Polo CD is a bit old now. And I'm not sure that I don't prefer the non-choir version. The Pacifica Quartet are first class in the 13th string quartet.

My Choir gave mecthe complete Myaskovsky symphonies on CD and I own three versions of his sprawling sixth. A few years ago, I made a pilgrimage to London to hear Jurowski and the LPO in the sixth. I'm glad to see that the BBC PO are using the Choral version of its finale. I imagine Sinaisky will be a good choice for this turbulent piece. If it fits with my diary, I must attend!

I love them all and listen often,that doesn't mean you will agree they're all worth listening to.
The Taneyev Qt recordings are all in the Naxos Library .
I'm not capable of any in depth analysis but I think the best are Nos 3,7,8 and 13.

The Warner Svetlanov box of the symphonies is now £128 on Amazon (£84 used !) whereas not all that long ago it was around a third of that price.

However, Presto Classical offers FLAC downloads of the box for £37 and mp3 for £29 ... though sadly without any booklet.

I have the Polyansky recording of Symphony No 27 plus Cello Concerto played by Alexander Ivashkin. It's a disc I greatly enjoy (the Cello Concerto is gorgeous).

(Qobuz has a few of the Svetlanov symphony discs on their other release on the Alto/Olympia label. I played one the other day and found the sound fiercely bright and splashy.)

I have to admit that apart from a few short pieces of piano music on various discs the only Myaskovsky I know is the Cello Concerto in the famous Rostropovich/Sargent recording and in a later but excellent account with Maisky and Pletnev on DG.
