    Lourie, Arthur (1892-1966)

    Wikipedia page:

    Key article by Alex Ross:

    In particular, quote:

What I'd most like to hear, though, is a first-rate rendition of Lourié's Concerto Spirituale, whose score is online at Boosey. Taruskin discusses it at fascinating length, noting the possibility that its cool sacred sonorities influenced Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms. The bootleg YouTube video above, apparently from a 1995 Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin concert with Gennady Rozhdestvensky conducting and Viktoria Postnikova at the piano, is all but unlistenable, but it gives a tantalizing hint of what might be Lourié's masterwork.

    I completely agree.

Have long been wanting to hear a proper recording of this exceptional music:

Arthur-Vincent Lourié (Propoysk 1892 - Princeton 1966)Concerto spirituale for chorus, piano and orchestra (1929) Sorry for the sound quality, but this is the...

I would particularly recommend his string quartets on:

if you can find it at a sensible price.

Wouldn't it be nice if Radio 3 could do a series on such almost unknown Russian composers, of whom there would seem to be quite a number, as I recall from Schopenhaurian's links on here a few years ago. After all, they do have the resources to obtain some of these expensive rare recordings, don't they??

That's kind. I did discover Lourie a while ago during my extensive searching. What tends to happen then is that if someone stands out I will mutter something in a post and hope on occasions a forum member responds. Here - not unusually actually - Bryn did respond and positively. I was, therefore, aware that it wasn't an entirely remote suggestion and that he had got there first, probably referring Lourie in various posts long before I had. That was good to know. I do have one Lourie disc and it is not the one mentioned today here by Bryn. It is a 1993-94 recording by the Moscow Conservatory/Russian Chamber Choir entitled Songs-Choruses. Certainly I agree that Radio 3 - who I thought did have a series along the lines you mention not so long ago but I could easily be wrong - could do more to identify and broadcast such composers, especially focussing on pieces that are largely inaccessible.
