    Newton, Rodney, born 1945

My good friend Rodney Newton has just had a CD released by Toccata Classics of his orchestral music. So I thought it would be an ideal time here to post a thread. His orchestral music is okay tonal by nature but very cultured . He certainly knows how to write music in this style. He has a style near to RVW than anyone else but in his own way.

He has also composed a number of works for brass band of which, this year, one of his works has been chosen for the 4th Section of the regional qualifying round for the National Brass Band Championships of GB.

Recently surveyed this on... Spotify (sorry!) as Toccata do put out some neglected and sometimes interesting repertoire. I'm rather partial to Newton's Distant Nebulae, even if there is more than a passing nod to Hovhaness and (less so) Ives. The two symphonies are quite different and warrant further investigation.

Then there is the discovery (for me) of the symphonist Hackbridge-Johnson whom Toccata are also championing ... so much music, so little time to investigate!

Indeed. He is raising funds to make volume 2!
